When I lived there in 2004, my answer was, “not much.” The buses didn’t run, taxis were scarce, and most of the city shut itself down. We spent evenings on our porch with neighbors.

Those nights spent on our porch were different than any classroom I had known. Learning became experiential, relational. We shared our lives and stories. I learned Spanish in conversation.

And it was about more than learning Spanish. Those conversations shaped the person I am today. That’s what TalkAbroad is meant to do.
